Celebrating Pride Month with post.script. SF!

Pride Month is celebrated around the world and marks a time to celebrate, support and empower LGBTQIA+ communities. It’s not only a vibrant expression of parties, protests and parades, but a loud reminder of the power of self-affirmation, equity and respect for ALL.

San Francisco has been the home of Pride since 1969 – beginning after the Stonewall Riots and has become one of the world’s largest LGBTQIA+ celebrations!

post.script. takes pride in partnering with local and national LGBTQIA+ artists, brands and makers, and we look forward to this celebration every year to amplify the work and art of our LGBTQIA+ communities. We’ll get into the history of Pride Month down below so you know all the reasons this month calls for celebration and advocacy!

The History of Pride Month

The Stonewall Riots of 1969, which was a pivotal event in LGBTQIA+ history, were the result of a police raid on June 28, 1969 of the Stonewall Inn (a gay bar in NYC). The raid sparked a series of protests and riots that became the catalyst for the Gay Rights movement all across the U.S. It was because of the nationwide uprising, that LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups began to form.

Now let’s get into how San Francisco plays a major role in all of this. Harvey Milk. Yep. One of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S. made significant strides for gay rights before he was assassinated in 1978. The 70s also saw the emergence of the Castro District, which became one of the first gay neighborhoods in the U.S. and a vibrant safe haven for the LGBTQIA+ community.

The first-ever San Francisco Pride Parade took place in 1972 and has grown to one of the most iconic Pride events globally! Pride Month celebrations have evolved from small local marches and protests to expansive nationwide parades and festivals, full of diversity, inclusivity, and advocacy. As this month-long celebration continues to grow, it always remains a powerful reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pride Month in San Francisco

Pride Month in San Francisco is truly a sight to see. Seriously. You have to be here to truly experience how magical it is – the stuff Insta can’t possibly capture! The city's rich history of its inclusive atmosphere, iconic landmarks like the Castro District, and progressive values make it a unique beacon for diversity, inclusion, and acceptance. Pride in SF is so much more than a parade (even though the parade is iconic, let’s be honest); but it’s a month-long festival of events, gatherings, activities and activism for the LGBTQIA+ community’s past, present and future.

We all know that the SF Pride Parade is like the Beyonce of the halftime show, attracting over a million folks from all over the world! Floats, music, costumes, flags, glitter, dancing, vendors… all of it. Plus plenty of representatives from organizations and communities making impactful LGBTQIA+ efforts.

In the past and whenever we are able, we have donated a portion of our sales to the Lyric Center for LGBTQQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning) Youth.

We love what the Lyric Center does for the community and we will continue to support them, and others like them, in their mission to build community through education and leadership development with LGBTQIA+ youth, their families and allies.

Pride Month Gift Ideas

Aside from donating to LGBTQIA+ organizations each year during Pride, post.script. takes part in the festivities by featuring Pride Month gifts and goods and decorating our shop window for the month.

More importantly than having pride-themed gifts and cards and decorations, is that we partner with LGBTQIA+ artists, brands and makers, keeping stock of their items both online and in-store year-round. This is such an important part of post.script’s own mission to bring joy and connectedness to the community through thoughtful gifts.

post.script. Collaborations with LGBTQIA + Artists and Brands

One of the biggest proponents of Pride Month, apart from all the fun of course, is being part of the advocacy and equality of the LGBTQIA+ community. We want to highlight our LGBTQIA+ brands and artists that we curate products from, coming from all over the U.S., so you can check out and support more of their work!
