The Baggu Story

If you’ve ever seen a Baggu Bag, you know that they do not shy away from playful prints and vibrant colors. The brand was founded back in 2007 by Emily Sugihara at the age of 24, alongside her mother and childhood best friend. They started with one product: a simple, sustainable, and reusable shopping bag that would be easy for shoppers to bring along on their day-to-day lifestyles.

Fast forward 17 years later, the brand has grown tremendously, and thanks to our Gen Z girlies on TikTok, the brand has gone viral due to their surprising weight capacity. One video shows six medium-sized pumpkins being carried in a Baggu tote bag. Six! Despite their compact size and thin material, Baggu bags mean business, and we’re here for it.

Why post.script. Loves Baggu Bags

Baggu bags remain one of our favorite products and brands to feature in the post.script. store and in our online inventory. Not only is the brand such an inspiration by their use of prints and sustainable production, but Baggu is also AAPI woman-owned and local to San Francisco! The reusable shopping bags are always a hit with shoppers who come into our local gift store, and we make sure to keep the trendiest styles and prints in stock.

Chandler Tang, the founder of post.script., can directly relate to the entrepreneurial spirit of Baggu founder, Emily Sugihara. They both studied fashion and art and share a love for quirky designs and modern colors that are brought into the aesthetics of their products.

Aside from the similarities of the founders, we just love the sustainability, versatility and effortless style of the Baggu bags. It’s hard not to!

Versatile For All Occasions

Speaking of versatility, let's talk about the capabilities of these bags. Thanks to TikTok fans, we know that the Baggu reusable shopping tote is small yet extremely mighty, with the standard size bag holding up to 50 pounds or three grocery bags worth of stuff… or apparently pumpkins. But, it’s not just for the grocery store, seriously!

We’ve seen our own SF gift shop team members and customers come in with their Baggu bags and we love seeing the versatility in action. Owner Chandler Tang always has 2-3 with her in her backpack at all times for grocery and spontaneous hauls!

Despite the Baggu girls hyping up the reusable shopping tote, that’s not the only hot item that the brand makes. Baggu has an amazing collection of bags of all kinds, from backpacks to crossbody bags, all made with sustainable, eco-friendly materials.

post.script. Tip: Wrap Your Gifts in a Baggu Bag

Did you know you can gift wrap with a Baggu Bag?! It’s such a unique, eco-friendly way to wrap a gift while giving one as well. This video featured on Baggu’s TikTok shows a quick example of how a reusable bag was used to wrap several gifts. The recipient can then keep the gift and the bag it came in to reuse again and again.

If you’re looking for some style inspiration, we loved this article by Vogue featuring how the Baggu Queen herself (Emily Sugihara) styles her Baggu bags with her bold prints and colors in her signature quirky fashion style.

Baggu's Dedication to Sustainability

It’s no secret that Baggu has figured out how to get the most out of what appears to be made from very little. The driving factor behind the entire brand started with the dream of doing just that – eliminating and minimizing waste while offering a lasting, durable product. The brand is able to create its products sustainably across all functions, from design and marketing, to production and materials.

The bags are designed with as few materials as possible, using recycled nylon, canvas, mesh and polyfill. The reusable tote is literally made with one continuous piece of recycled nylon material, with the neck of the bag being reserved to create the carrying pouch each bag comes with. Seriously, it’s impressive!

We love that Baggu takes its sustainability efforts so seriously. It adds another reason to our long list of why we love these products so much. Shoppers can feel good about their purchase just as much as we can feel good about selling them.

Why Are Baggu Bags So Popular?

If we haven’t already given you enough reasons as to why Baggu bags are so popular, then we’ll highlight a few more things folks are loving about these bags, especially on social media.

As mentioned earlier, TikTokers have been obsessing over the brand. “What’s in my Baggu” videos have been taking over the platform with users capturing just how much stuff they’ve managed to stash in their tote. It’s truly wild. The Baggu Crescent bag in particular has gone viral thanks to its versatile aesthetics and ample space. They come in lots of cute neutrals that are easy to pair with so many outfits.

The most popular bag, the standard Baggu reusable bag, starts at a mere $14 and comes in so many variations of prints and colors that we seriously can’t pick a favorite. They can store anything from your groceries and shopping hauls to your laptop and daily work necessities.

Right now we are really loving the Sanrio Hello Kitty Collection!

How to Clean Your Baggu Bag

With all that work it’ll be putting in, we’re sure you’re wondering how to clean your Baggu bag. Good news; cleaning your bag is as easy as using it! All of the Nylon Baggu bags are machine washable in cold water. Just line dry and use them again and again. They’ll be good as new.
